The community of physicists from the Marian Smoluchowski Institute of Physics, Jagiellonian University in Kraków was deeply moved learning about Professor M. Howard Lee’s death in November 2016. Professor Lee was a long lasting, enthusiastic, supportive and exceptional Friend to many of us.

Since several years Howard was a frequent Guest to the Institute of Physics and the Invited Speaker to a series of conferences entitled “Marian Smoluchowski Symposia on Statistical Physics”, organized annually by the University.

On those occasions He served not only as a distinguished lecturer, sharing with us his fundamental understanding of statistical mechanics and problems of ergodicity. Frequently, he was also involved in editorial work and publishing conference proceedings prepared by Acta Physica Polonica B. His expertise in theory of chaos, irreversibility and nonequilibrium thermodynamics made Him a special interlocutor during many discussions held during those meetings.

Howard was a man of value, always supportive in contacts with other people, encouraging and understanding in relations with young colleagues. His knowledge, gentleness, passion for music and culture made him a great companion in free time. We all miss Him a lot.
